January 14th should seem like a distant past to Comilla now. After that day, the team was forgotten! In the BPL, the last-time champions started the season with three consecutive losses. Imrul Kayes’ team lost their first encounter against Rangpur Raiders, Sylhet Strikers and Fortune Barisal – all three teams that eventually made it to the playoffs.
Then on January 16, Comilla got their first win by defeating Chittagong Challengers in Chittagong-Part. Comilla won 9 consecutive matches from that match until Rangpur beat today! Today they blew Rangpur in their last match in the group stage.
Comilla has already set the record for most consecutive wins in one season in BPL. For so long it belonged to Barisal. Last season Fortune Barisal won seven matches in a row. Barisal’s triumph came to an end in the final, losing to Comilla.
Comilla defeated Rangpur today, their joy was also running. Before this match they had won six matches in a row. If they win today, they would have touched Barisal for the second highest consecutive match win in BPL.
Among the franchise-based T20 teams, Comilla’s record is at the top. Above all there is the IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders. The team won the IPL in 2014. Then they played the Champions League T20. Kolkata won 14 consecutive matches in the two leagues that season.
Big Bash team Sydney Sixers and CPL team Trinbago Knight Riders are second in the list with 12 wins each. Sydney won 12 consecutive matches in 2012. Like Kolkata, they continued their winning streak in the Champions League T20, after winning the Big Bash in the regular season. Trinbago’s record is relatively new. In 2020, they were unbeaten champions in the CPL.
Next in the franchise based leagues are the Guyana Amazon Warriors of the CPL. The team reached the final in 2019 after winning 10 consecutive matches, but then lost in the group stage to the Barbados Tridents who won only 5 out of 10 matches. Now if Comilla wins the first qualifier and goes on to win the final, then Guyana will be on top.
All in all, the T20 consecutive wins record should be considered insurmountable. Sialkot Stallions won 25 consecutive matches in Pakistan’s domestic T20 Cup from 2006 to 2010. The team won four consecutive tournaments. India’s Karnataka, which is second in this list, won 14 consecutive matches between 2018 and 2019.
The record for consecutive wins in international cricket is jointly held by Afghanistan and Malaysia. Afghanistan between 2016 and 2017, Malaysia in 2022—both teams won 13 consecutive matches. And the record in women’s international T20 is Thailand – 17 matches. After winning 16 consecutive matches, Australia is second.
